SA: Howard says wage case fair

ADELAIDE, April 29 AAP - Today's living wage case decision was a fair increase for low paid
Australians, Prime Minister John Howard said.

Mr Howard said his government had brought about major and fair reforms in the area of
industrial relations and the process would continue.

"And that has been demonstrated today by the living wage case which has delivered a fair
increase to the low paid in the Australian community," he told a Liberal Party gathering in
Adelaide.

"We were told by the unions and the Labor Party before 1996 that that wouldn't happen.

"The reality is the wage and salary earners in Australia now are better off than they have
been for more than 10 years."

The Industrial Relations Commission today agreed to a $12 increase for workers on awards
earning up to and including $510 a week and $10 for those earning more than $510.
