Five-thousand striking garment workers marched in silent ranks through the Polish quarter of Chicago on the Northwest Side at the funeral of Frank Negreckis. Radicals in the crowd were heard to mutter that "only blood could wipe out the stain of blood." Negreckis was a striker who was shot and killed in a riot at North Wood and Bloomingdale. The garment workers began their march from the home of the victim, with the procession making its way to the Church of the Annunciation at North and Paulina. About 30 detectives in plainclothes were scattered in the neighborhood because officials feared uniformed officers might incite violence. Eight strikers carried the coffin aloft on their shoulders. Just as the body reached the church, word came that another striker, who was shot the same day as Negreckis, had died.
